Planning
Jean fell in love with the large floral fabric used in her quilt during an especially hard New England winter. She created this simple, cheery design with thoughts of spring. We instruct you to make the pieced squares for the Shoo Fly Blocks using Jean's quick method (see Diagrams I and II)—the squares turn out slightly large and are trimmed to the exact size needed.

Step 1. On wrong side of white texture 7 1/2" square, draw 2 diagonal lines (from corner to corner) and horizontal and vertical lines through center (3 3/4" from edges) with marking tool of your choice. Place marked square on large floral 7 1/2" square, right sides together (see Diagram I-A). Press lightly. Pin away from center along marked lines. Referring to Diagram I-B, sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked diagonal lines. Press sewing lines.
Step 2. Cut along all drawn lines (I-C) to yield 8 pieced squares (I-D). Repeat process with remaining 7 1/2" square pairs to make 48 total pieced squares. Using 6" square acrylic rotary cutting ruler, trim all pieced squares to 3" square (see Diagram II).
