Yellow/white stripe Other Materials |
| Planning Kelly used wonderful plaid and stripe flannels for her baby quilt. She carefully planned the cutting of the white/blue/yellow stripe used for the setting triangles so the stripe would run the length of the quilt top. If you wish to do likewise, cut the two 4" squares with diagonals running in opposite directions (see diagram at right). |
| Cutting the Fabric Blue plaid and white solid—cut from each: ... 5 strips 2 1/2" x width of fabric (WOF) Yellow texture ... *4 strips 2 1/2" x WOF ... 12 squares 5 1/4" x 5 1/4", cut in half twice diagonally to make 48 quarter-square triangles Yellow/blue small plaid ... 12 squares 5 1/4" x 5 1/4", cut in half twice diagonally to make 48 quarter-square triangles |
White/blue/yellow stripe ... 6 squares 7 1/2" x 7 1/2", cut in half twice diagonally to make 24 quarter-square triangles (4 left over—see Step 3) ... 2 squares 4" x 4", cut in half diagonally to make 4 half-square triangles (see Planning) Yellow/blue large plaid ... 4 strips 4H? x 46?, cut on lengthwise grain *Cut first. |
Step 1. Sew blue plaid and white solid 2 1/2" x WOF strips together as shown in Diagram I-A. Press seam in direction of arrow. Make 5. Cut 70 segments 2 1/2" each. Referring to Diagram I-B, sew 2 segments together to make Four-patch Block. Make 35.
Step 2. Arrange and sew 2 yellow texture and 2 yellow/blue small plaid 5 1/4" quarter-square triangles together as shown in Diagram II to make Hourglass Block. Make 24.

Step 3. Note: The setting triangles on all edges and corners are cut slightly oversized to allow trimming quilt edges even after assembly.
Referring to Assembly Diagram, carefully arrange and sew 11 diagonal rows using white/blue/yellow stripe 7 1/2" quarter-square triangles (with stripe running length of quilt), and blocks. Sew rows together. Sew white/blue/yellow stripe 4" half-square triangles to corners (watch stripe—see Planning). Trim edges even.
Step 4. Stitch 2 1/2" x WOF yellow texture strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining yellow strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Stitch yellow/blue large plaid 4 1/2" x 46" strips to sides; trim even. Sew remaining yellow/blue strips to top/bottom; trim even.

Step 5. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Kelly machine ditch quilted the blocks and inner border. A straight feather design is centered on the outer border. Bind quilt with yellow/white stripe fabric.

Kelly stitched up a second cozy colorful combination using the same baby quilt pattern!
